Whitney Wolfe Herd has given dating apps a new competitor with her dating app Bumble, with letting women make the first move. Despite entering an over-saturated digital market of dating apps, Bumble has gained over 22 million users. Bumble has also earned over $100 million through in-app purchases and more than 10% of its users pay $9.99 per month for extra perks. Herd turned down a $450 million offer from Match Group and had approached her again with a valuation of over $1 billion. She was named in 2017 and 2018 as one of the Forbes 30 Under 30 as well as one of Business Insider’s 30 Most Important Women Under 30 in Tech in 2014 and one of Elle’s Women in Tech.

Andrey Andreev, founder of Badoo, a dating-focused social network, befriended Whitney Wolfe Herd and began partnering with her. Andreev made an investment of $10 million for marketing and growth and took 79% of the company. With Andreev’s knowledge of A-B tests, data on monetization, and marketing and branding knowledge, Bumble was able to take pointers from Badoo. When it was time for users to begin taking advantage of in-app purchases, was able to subscriptions from launch in credit to Badoo. When the app premiered in December of 2014, it gained over 100,000 downloads in one month. A year later, Bumble had over 15 million conversations and 80 million matches.

Bumble is now headquartered in Austin, Texas with 70 employees (85% are women). While most women are looking for love, many of Bumble’s users stated they were also interested in gaining new friendships and career. So two new offshoots, Bumble BFF and Bumble Bizz were born. Bumble BFF (which now has over 3 million users) focuses on matching women together for platonic relationships while Bumble Bizz linked women together who were interested in business networking.

Whitney Wolfe Herd graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas where she majored in International Studies. After graduating, she spent time in Southeast Asia, where she worked in orphanages. She is now married to oil heir Michael Herd, whom she married in Italy.
